Capital One CreditWise is free, open to anyone over 18 with a TransUnion credit file, and it does not require a Capital One card. It shows a FICO Score 8 based on TransUnion data, monitors both your TransUnion and Experian reports for changes, scans the dark web for your Social Security number and email address, and includes a credit simulator. Capital One states you can use every feature without hurting your credit score. Its real limit is that it tells you what your score is and what one change might do, not which of your accounts to fix first.

CreditWise sits in an unusual spot. It is a free product from a card issuer, which normally means the score is a loss leader attached to a wall of offers. That part is true enough. What makes it worth a serious look anyway is the model underneath: while most free trackers hand you a VantageScore, CreditWise hands you a FICO Score 8, and FICO is what the majority of lenders actually read.

That one difference changes what the tool is good for. Below is what it gives you, verified against Capital One's own CreditWise page in August 2026, and where it stops.

Is Capital One CreditWise free?

Yes, and there is no paid tier waiting behind it. CreditWise costs nothing, has no trial period that converts into a subscription, and does not ask for a card number to sign up. Capital One funds it the way every free credit product is funded, by showing you card and loan offers you might qualify for.

Read those offers as advertising rather than advice. A pre-qualification panel inside a card issuer's own app is a marketing surface first. It is not dishonest, and pre-qualification really does use a soft pull, but the card at the top of the list is there because it converts, not because a neutral party ranked it against your file.

Can you get CreditWise without a Capital One card?

Yes. Capital One is explicit about it: "Anybody can get CreditWise, even if you're not a Capital One customer. You need to be over the age of 18 with a valid social security number that can be matched to a credit profile from the TransUnion credit bureau."

That last clause is the one that trips people up. If TransUnion cannot match you to a file, you cannot enroll, no matter who you bank with. This is the usual thin-file problem: people who have never held a credit account, recent arrivals to the United States, and anyone whose file sits under a former name or an old address that never got updated. If enrollment fails for that reason, the fix is a reporting account rather than a different app, which we walk through in how to build credit from scratch.

Does CreditWise use a real FICO score?

Yes. Capital One's own wording is "a FICO Score 8 based on TransUnion data." FICO Score 8 is the most widely used version in general lending, so this is not an educational proxy or a lookalike model. It is the real thing, calculated on one bureau's file.

The qualifier that matters is the bureau, not the model. You are seeing your TransUnion picture. If a lender pulls Experian or Equifax, the underlying data can differ, because reporting to the bureaus is voluntary and issuers do not all report to all three on the same schedule. Two people with identical habits can hold a 30 point spread across bureaus for no reason other than which accounts landed where, which is the subject of why one bureau score sits lower than another.

One more caveat for anyone with a mortgage in the near future. Conventional mortgage underwriting still runs on classic FICO, meaning FICO 2 on Experian, FICO 4 on TransUnion and FICO 5 on Equifax, and qualifies you on the middle of the three. FICO Score 8 is a newer model that is not used in that process. CreditWise will track you honestly and still show a number your loan officer does not see.

Does CreditWise have a credit score simulator?

Yes. Capital One lists a Credit Simulator among the tools included with the free account, and because CreditWise runs on FICO Score 8, the simulation is being performed on a real FICO model rather than an educational one. Among no-cost simulators that is the strongest position available right now.

It is worth knowing what the comparison looks like, because the best known free simulator has become hard to find. Credit Karma does not list a score simulator on either of its public tools pages in August 2026, and its old simulator address returns a 404, which is why people search for it by name so often. We cover the state of that tool and the full field on our Credit Karma simulator alternative page. The short version: CreditWise now offers the thing most people are still looking for at Credit Karma, and on a better model.

Treat the output the way you would treat any simulator. It isolates one change, holds everything else constant, and reports a range. Your real file moves for several reasons at once, so a simulated gain and your actual next score will rarely match to the point. A wider comparison of how far each tool can be trusted is in our roundup of the best credit score simulator options.

Does checking CreditWise hurt your credit score?

No. Capital One states plainly that "you can use all of CreditWise's features without hurting your credit score." Looking at your own credit is a soft inquiry, it is visible only to you, and no scoring model counts it. You can check it daily for a year and the file will not register a thing.

Only an application for new credit creates a hard inquiry, and even then a single one typically costs fewer than five points and stops being counted by FICO after twelve months. The distinction is set out in full in hard and soft credit inquiries.

What does CreditWise monitor?

More than the free tier of most competitors. CreditWise sends alerts on changes to both your TransUnion and your Experian credit reports, which is unusual for a no-cost product, since most free trackers watch a single bureau. It also runs dark web surveillance on your Social Security number and email address and tells you when either turns up in a breach dump.

Dark web alerts are useful as a trigger and useless as a solution. Knowing your Social Security number is circulating does not remove it from anywhere, and the practical next steps are freezing your files at all three bureaus, which is free by federal law and covered in how to freeze your credit, and reducing how much of your identity is publicly purchasable in the first place by having your personal details pulled down from the data broker and people search sites that list them. Brokers are where a large share of the name, address and phone data in those dumps originally came from.

What does CreditWise not do?

It does not tell you what to do. That sounds like a small gap and it is the whole gap. CreditWise is very good at four things: showing a real FICO Score 8, alerting you when something changes, letting you test a hypothetical, and flagging exposure. All four are observation.

The question people actually have is different. It is not what is my score, it is which of my six accounts is costing me the most points right now, and what should I do first. Answering that means reading the whole file at once and ranking the levers against each other by size and by speed. A simulator cannot do it, because it prices one move at a time in isolation and never puts them in order.

Is CreditWise accurate?

The number is accurate for what it is. It is a genuine FICO Score 8 calculated from your real TransUnion file, not an estimate. Where accuracy gets slippery is in the assumption that this is the number a lender will read, and for a mortgage it definitely is not.

The gap between a free score you track and the score an underwriter pulls comes from three ordinary sources. Different bureaus hold slightly different data. Different score versions weigh that data differently. And the two readings happen on different dates, with balances that reported at different points in the billing cycle. None of that is anybody being wrong. It is why lenders quote you from their own pull rather than the screenshot you bring in.

Should you use CreditWise or something else?

Use CreditWise. It is free, it costs you nothing in points, and it is the strongest no-cost option because it models a real FICO score rather than a proxy. If you want a second bureau view alongside it, Chase Credit Journey is also free, also open to non-customers, and reads Experian, which pairs neatly rather than duplicating. Our comparison of credit monitoring services covers where paid monitoring is worth the money and where it is not.

Add something else only when your question changes. Once you already know your number and the honest answer to "why is it stuck" is "I do not know", more monitoring will not tell you. That is the point where simulating a specific action and seeing the reasoning behind the result starts to be worth paying for. Creditpal reads your file read-only, explains in plain English what each factor is doing, ranks the levers by what they are worth and how fast they land, and shows its working on every simulation. It starts at $7 a month, shows no lender offers, and stays educational throughout. It does not file disputes, it is not credit repair, and it will never promise you a number or a date.
