Varo Believe Card Review with the Real Fees, Limits and Eligibility Rules

The Varo Believe card is a secured credit card with no annual fee, no interest and no credit check, and Varo reports it to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Its cardholder agreement lists every fee at $0 except a $3.50 charge at non-Allpoint ATMs. The catch is the setup: you need a Varo Bank account that received $200 or more in the past 31 days, you pay the balance in full every month, and the agreement gives Varo a security interest in your Varo checking and savings. It is one of the cheapest ways to add a tradeline to a thin file. It does nothing about late payments or collections already on your report, which is what CreditPal explains, from $7 a month.

Varo figures were read off varomoney.com/credit-builder, the Varo Believe Program Agreement (effective November 6, 2023, linked from Varo's Privacy and Legal page) and the Varo help center article Understanding Varo Believe on 30 September 2026. OpenSky figures come from its January 2026 cardholder agreements, Cleo and Extra from their own sites, all read in late September 2026. Vendors change terms, so confirm before you apply. CreditPal is not affiliated with any company in this table.

Does the Varo Believe card have any fees?

Almost none. The fee table in Varo's Believe agreement lists the annual fee, transaction fees, foreign transaction fee, card replacement, penalty fees, over-limit fee and returned payment fee all at $0.00, and the APR for purchases and cash advances at 0.00%. The one charge is $3.50 for a cash withdrawal at an ATM outside the Allpoint network, and the agreement treats every ATM withdrawal as a cash advance on the card. The ATM owner can add its own fee on top.

That makes Believe one of the cheapest tradelines available. For comparison, Cleo's Builder plan costs $14.99 a month, Extra costs $149 a year, and OpenSky's standard Secured card charges $35 a year. If your only goal is to add an on-time card to a thin file and you are happy banking with Varo, cost is not the reason to look elsewhere.

Who qualifies for the Varo Believe card?

You do not need a credit score, and there is no hard pull to apply. What you need is a Varo relationship. Varo's product page lists three conditions: a Varo Bank Account with money in it, no overdue Varo Advances, and incoming deposits of $200 or more over the past 31 days to your Varo Bank or Savings Account. You apply inside the Varo app once you qualify.

In practice that means routing at least part of a paycheck, benefit payment or other regular deposit into Varo before you can get the card. Varo's Move Your Pay feature can then send part of each direct deposit straight into the Believe Secured Account. People who want to keep their bank and just add a card are better served by a standalone secured card such as OpenSky, which we compare card by card.

How the Varo Believe spending limit and Safe Pay work

There is no fixed credit line. Your spending limit is whatever sits in your Believe Secured Account, capped at $2,500 a day for purchases, $1,000 a day for cash advances and $10,000 per billing cycle, with a limit of 30 purchase transactions a day. Money in the Secured Account earns no interest and can only be used to pay the card.

Safe Pay is the autopay option Varo recommends. The agreement is specific about what you give up: by turning it on you opt out of the 21-day window after each billing cycle, and the payment is taken within one day of the cycle closing. If the balance is larger than your Secured Account, the payment is not made and you get 21 days to deposit the difference. Miss that and you are in default, the card can be suspended, and late payments are reported to the bureaus.

The clause most Varo Believe reviews skip

Section 5 of the Believe agreement, printed in capitals, says that as a condition of the program you grant Varo a security interest in your Varo Bank Account and Varo Savings Account. If a card transaction ever exceeds your Secured Account balance, Varo can reduce your checking or savings by the excess and any fees, and if those accounts are short it can move the money later when funds arrive.

For most users this never triggers, because purchases above the secured balance are declined. It still matters if you plan to keep your emergency savings at Varo, and it is one more reason Believe fits people who treat Varo as their main bank rather than a side account.

Does the Varo Believe card raise your credit score?

It can, if your file is thin. Varo says it reports your monthly payments to the three major bureaus and that it can take up to six weeks for Believe payments to show in your score. Its headline claim is a 40+ point average increase after three months of on-time payments. The footnote narrows that: it covers customers who already had a VantageScore 3.0 score, measured as of January 6, 2026, and Varo adds that some customers may not see an increase. The score in the Varo app is a VantageScore 3.0 from TransUnion, not a FICO score, and most lenders use FICO.

What a new card cannot do is offset marks already on your report. A 60-day late payment, a collection or a maxed-out card elsewhere will outweigh one young secured account for a long time. If you are not sure which of those is doing the damage, see our credit builder apps comparison for the tradeline options, and our Chime Credit Builder comparison for the other bank-linked card people weigh against Believe. The Current Build Card review covers the third.

That is the gap CreditPal fills, from $7 a month. It connects read-only, explains in plain English which factors are costing you the most points, lets you simulate a change before you make it, and orders the fixes. It opens no accounts, lends nothing, does not file disputes and does not report rent.

Straight answers

Questions people ask before they buy

Is the Varo Believe card a real credit card?
