Alternative
TransUnion Credit Monitoring Review, TransUnion Credit Premium Cost at $29.95 a Month, and a Cheaper Alternative
TransUnion sells two credit monitoring plans. Credit Essentials is free, needs no card, and already gives you a daily TransUnion report, a daily VantageScore 3.0 and alerts on your TransUnion file. Credit Premium costs $29.95 a month plus tax, which is $359.40 a year, and adds Equifax and Experian alerts, three-bureau reports and scores refreshed only once a quarter, dark web scans, a resolution specialist and up to $1 million in identity theft expense insurance. Neither plan raises a score. CreditPal is not monitoring: it reads your file, shows which factors cost you the most points and sequences a plan, from $7 a month.

How much does TransUnion credit monitoring cost?
TransUnion's own plan comparison shows two subscriptions. Credit Essentials is listed as "Free (No credit card required)." Credit Premium is listed at "$29.95/mo (plus tax where applicable)" with "Cancel anytime." There is no annual plan and no introductory month on that page, so the price in month one is the price in month thirteen.
Here is what a year of each bureau-run plan costs, next to CreditPal. These are our own calculations from each company's published monthly price, before sales tax:
| Plan | Per month | Per year | Three-bureau report and scores | Score model |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TransUnion Credit Essentials | $0 | $0 | No, TransUnion only | VantageScore 3.0 |
| TransUnion Credit Premium | $29.95 | $359.40 | Quarterly | VantageScore 3.0 |
| Experian IdentityWorks Premium | $24.99 | $299.88 | Quarterly | FICO Score |
| Equifax Complete Premier | $19.95 | $239.40 | Once a year | VantageScore 3.0 |
| CreditPal, billed yearly | $7 | $84 | Reads all three | Explains every factor |
TransUnion Credit Premium is the most expensive of the three bureau plans, $59.52 a year more than Experian and $120 a year more than Equifax, and it shows the same VantageScore 3.0 model as the free tier.
What the free TransUnion plan already gives you
Before paying anything, look at what Credit Essentials includes. TransUnion lists a daily TransUnion credit report, a daily VantageScore 3.0, TransUnion credit monitoring with alerts on critical changes, credit score factor grades, a "credit score potential" estimate, a debt-to-income analysis and access to its Service Center for freezes, disputes and fraud alerts. Its FAQ is plain about the cost: "TransUnion Credit Essentials is a free subscription. You do not need to supply your credit card either."
What the free plan does not include is identity monitoring. The same FAQ answers "Does this product offer Identity Monitoring Services?" with "No." It also carries personalized card offers from Bankrate's CardMatch tool, and the disclosure says Bankrate pays TransUnion when you click or are approved. Credit Premium keeps those offers.
So the $29.95 buys five things: alerts on your Equifax and Experian files, three-bureau reports and scores four times a year, dark web and SSN change monitoring, a dedicated identity resolution specialist, and up to $1 million in identity theft expense reimbursement insurance. It also unlocks two tools, Credit Calendar and Credit Score Estimator.
Three-bureau alerts are daily, three-bureau reports are quarterly
This is the detail most TransUnion credit monitoring reviews skip. The plan table lists "3-Bureau Credit Reports & Scores (Quarterly refreshes)" and explains that "Equifax and Experian update quarterly." The alerts run every day across all three bureaus, but the full Equifax and Experian reports and scores you can open and read refresh only four times a year.
That matters if you are preparing for a mortgage or auto loan. A lender will pull a report dated the day it applies, while the Equifax and Experian copies in your TransUnion dashboard may be up to three months old. If you are about to apply, pull all three free reports at annualcreditreport.com the same week instead.
A footnote adds a second caveat: "Delivery of TransUnion Credit Premium features may be dependent on the ability to obtain your credit report and/or credit score from the applicable bureau."
The $24.95 price and the TrueIdentity plan other reviews quote
Search TransUnion credit monitoring reviews and several top results quote $24.95 a month, and others describe a TrueIdentity Premium plan at $39.99 a month or $29.99 on a yearly commitment. When we read TransUnion's plan page on 29 September 2026, the paid plan was Credit Premium at $29.95 a month, and trueidentity.com redirected to transunion.com. If a review's math is built on $24.95, add $60 a year to it.
TransUnion also sells a second identity brand. IdentityForce, which TransUnion owns, offers UltraSecure+Credit at $34.90 a month or $349.90 billed yearly, with the same quarterly three-bureau reports, a daily TransUnion VantageScore 3.0 and $2 million of insurance. Paid yearly it undercuts Credit Premium by $9.50, and it refunds the unused part of a plan when you cancel. We price every IdentityForce tier in our IdentityForce review.
Is TransUnion Credit Premium worth it?
It is worth it for one kind of buyer: someone recovering from identity theft, or at real risk of it, who wants daily alerts on all three bureaus, a person to call and insurance in one app. TransUnion's resolution specialists are available Monday through Friday, 8am to 8pm Eastern, closed on major holidays. If that is you, compare it against Equifax Complete Premier first: it is $10 a month cheaper, carries up to $2 million in coverage, and also removes you from people-search sites, though its three-bureau report comes only once a year.
It is not worth it if your real goal is a higher score. Monitoring tells you something changed. It does not tell you which of your accounts is costing you the most points or what to pay down first, and a VantageScore 3.0 is usually not the model a mortgage or auto lender reads. Our credit monitoring services comparison prices Aura, LifeLock and IdentityIQ on the same terms, and the Experian CreditWorks review covers the plan that shows a FICO Score. If fraud is the worry and not the score, you can freeze your credit at all three bureaus at no cost.
CreditPal answers the score question. It connects read-only, explains in plain English which factors are costing you the most points, lets you simulate a change before you make it and puts the fixes in the order that pays. From $7 a month, or $84 a year against $359.40. It does not monitor for fraud, it is not a credit repair organization and it does not promise a score.
How to cancel TransUnion Credit Premium
TransUnion's plan page says Premium can be cancelled at any time, and the free Credit Essentials plan remains available if you still want a daily TransUnion report and alerts afterwards. The page does not say whether a partial month is refunded, so cancel a few days before your billing date and check your card statement the following month to confirm the charge stopped.
Straight answers
Questions people ask before they buy
How much is TransUnion credit monitoring per month?
TransUnion Credit Essentials is free and needs no card. TransUnion Credit Premium costs $29.95 a month plus tax where applicable, which is $359.40 a year before tax. TransUnion lists no annual plan and no first-month discount on its plan page.
Is TransUnion credit monitoring free?
The TransUnion-only plan is. Credit Essentials gives you a daily TransUnion report, a daily VantageScore 3.0 and alerts on your TransUnion file at no cost. Monitoring of Equifax and Experian, identity monitoring and insurance require Credit Premium at $29.95 a month.
Does TransUnion Credit Premium give you all 3 credit reports?
Yes, but only quarterly. TransUnion says Equifax and Experian reports and scores update quarterly on Credit Premium, while alerts on all three bureaus run daily. For a same-week view of all three before a loan application, use annualcreditreport.com.
What credit score does TransUnion show?
Both TransUnion plans show a VantageScore 3.0 calculated by TransUnion. TransUnion itself notes that lenders and insurers may use different scores. Most mortgage and auto lenders read a FICO version, so the number in the app can differ from the one a lender sees.
Is TransUnion Credit Premium worth $29.95?
Only if you want three-bureau alerts, identity resolution help and insurance in one place. For monitoring alone, Equifax Complete Premier costs $19.95 and Experian Premium $24.99. For raising a score, monitoring does not help; CreditPal explains what to fix first from $7 a month.
What happened to TrueIdentity?
TrueIdentity was TransUnion's older consumer brand. When we checked on 29 September 2026, trueidentity.com redirected to transunion.com, and TransUnion's plan page listed only Credit Essentials and Credit Premium. Log in through transunion.com to manage an existing account.
What is the best alternative to TransUnion credit monitoring?
For fraud alerts, Equifax Complete Premier covers three bureaus for $19.95 a month, or you can freeze your credit for free. For a higher score, CreditPal reads your file, explains which factors cost you the most points and sequences a plan, from $7 a month.
