Grow Credit Mastercard Review: Grow Credit Card Plans, Real Pricing, and When a Grow Credit Alternative Fits Better
Grow Credit gives you a virtual Mastercard that can only pay subscriptions such as Netflix, Spotify or a phone bill, then reports your monthly repayment to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Its own help center and Google Play listing price the plans at $3.99 a month for Build, $6.99 for Grow and $12.99 for Accelerate, or $39.99, $69.99 and $129.99 a year. Most reviews, and Grow's own App Store listing, still describe a free Build plan with Grow at $4.99 and Accelerate at $9.99. Grow decides which plans you qualify for after reading 60 to 90 days of your bank activity, so the price you see at signup is the one to trust. The reported credit limit is 12 times the amount you can actually spend: a $17 monthly limit reports as $204. CreditPal is not a tradeline. It reads your existing file read-only, explains which factors are costing you points, simulates a change before you make it and sequences a plan, from $7 a month.

Grow Credit figures were read off its help center plan table and its Google Play listing on 22 September 2026. Its App Store listing still shows older prices (Build free, Grow $4.99, Accelerate $9.99). Kikoff, Kovo, Self and Ava figures come from their own sites on the dates given on their pages here. Vendors change prices, so confirm at signup.
How much does Grow Credit cost?
Grow Credit has three plan levels, and each comes in a standard version and a Starter version for people who need a deposit to get in. Its help center publishes the full table, and the Google Play listing agrees with it:
| Plan | Monthly spending limit | Reported credit limit | Starter deposit | Monthly fee | Annual fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Build | $17 | $204 | None | $3.99 | $39.99 |
| Build Starter | $17 | $204 | $17 | $3.99 | $39.99 |
| Grow | $50 | $600 | None | $6.99 | $69.99 |
| Grow Starter | $50 | $600 | $50 | $6.99 | $69.99 |
| Accelerate | $150 | $1,800 | None | $12.99 | $129.99 |
| Accelerate Starter | $150 | $1,800 | $150 | $12.99 | $129.99 |
Over a year that is $47.88 for Build on monthly billing or $39.99 paid up front, $83.88 or $69.99 for Grow, and $155.88 or $129.99 for Accelerate. The annual option saves $7.89, $13.89 and $25.89 respectively. Grow and Accelerate are the premium plans, and they are the only ones that unlock premium subscriptions such as phone carriers and car insurance.
The fee is on top of the subscriptions, not instead of them. Grow's help center is direct about it: "The plan fee does not cover the cost of your subscription services." You still repay every Netflix or Spotify charge that lands on the card. So on Build you pay $3.99 for the reporting plus whatever your $17 of subscriptions cost, and that last part is money you were spending anyway.
Is the Grow Credit Build plan still free?
Not according to Grow's own current pages, and this is where almost every review in Google is out of date. Most third-party reviews describe Build as free, Build Starter at $1.99 or $2.99, Grow at $4.99 and Accelerate at $9.99. Grow's own App Store description still says the same thing: "Build Free."
Grow's help center plan table lists Build at $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and its Google Play listing says "Cost: $3.99 per month" for both Build and Build Starter, $6.99 for Grow and $12.99 for Accelerate. The help center's fee article, updated in February 2026, opens with "Grow Credit charges a membership plan fee to join their Credit Building platform," and says monthly fees are owed "even if you don't use the card that month." None of the current help pages describe a free tier.
Two things explain the mismatch. The older prices were real and are what most reviews were written against. And Grow decides which plans you can see after you link your bank, so different people can be shown different offers. Treat the figure on the plan selection screen as the price, and treat any "free" claim in a review, including the App Store blurb, as unverified until you see it there.
The reported limit is 12 times what you can spend
This is the mechanic that makes Grow work, and it is worth understanding before you pay for it. On Build you can charge $17 a month in subscriptions. Grow does not report a $17 limit. In its own words: "While the monthly spending limit is $17, we report the total credit limit as $204 ($17 x 12 months), which helps keep your credit utilization below 10%."
The math holds. If you use the full $17, the bureaus see a $17 balance on a $204 line, which is 8.3% utilization. The same ratio applies to Grow ($50 on $600) and Accelerate ($150 on $1,800). Whatever you do, the account reports low utilization, which is the point.
The catch is the same one that runs through Kikoff, Kovo and Ava: the reported number is not money you can use. You cannot put $204 of groceries on a Build card. You cannot even use it for everything: Grow says the card does not work through third-party processors like Amazon, Google or Roku, and some subscriptions are limited to one charge in 30 days. We break down how these closed-loop limits look to a lender in our Kikoff alternative comparison.
One more detail that changes the value math: Grow states that "just paying the fee is reported to the credit bureaus as an on time payment." So even a month with no subscription charges still produces a reported payment on the plan fee.
Who can get a Grow Credit card
Grow does not use your credit score to approve you. Its help center says "We do not take credit score into account when considering your application," and approval starts with a soft inquiry only, so applying does not cost you points. Instead, Grow runs what it calls a proprietary machine learning model over the last 60 to 90 days of your banking activity, read through Plaid, and that decides which plans you are offered.
You need a bank account where you deposit income or a bank-issued debit card, an SSN, a phone that receives texts, a physical address in one of the 50 states or DC, and you must be 18 or older. If your bank data does not qualify you for a standard plan, you are offered a Starter plan instead, with a deposit equal to the monthly spending limit. Grow refunds the deposit "after 12 months of consecutive on-time payments or in the event your Starter account is closed." One restriction worth noting: once you pick a Starter plan, Grow says you cannot change plans.
The card is virtual only. Grow does not issue a physical card, and it cannot be used outside the United States.
What happens if you miss a Grow Credit payment
Grow charges no late fee and no insufficient funds fee, which is better than many credit builder cards. The consequences are elsewhere. If a payment is missed, Grow disables the card and asks for the balance, and its help center says that if the balance is not paid in full after 30 days, the account may be reported as past due.
Grow does run a Late Payment Forgiveness program, and its rules are specific: your account must be in good standing, you can use it once every 12 months and three times over the life of the account, and it covers late or missed payments up to six months old. That is a genuinely useful safety net, and we have not seen it described in any other Grow review. It is still discretionary, so do not plan around it.
A reported 30-day late on a $204 line does the same kind of damage as one on a large card, which is why a small tradeline is not low risk. We explain how much a single late costs and how long it lingers in our guide to late payments and your credit score.
Grow Credit versus Kikoff, Kovo and Self
All four build credit by reporting a new account, but they build different kinds of history at different prices. Grow and Kikoff are revolving lines. Kovo and Self are installment accounts. On annual cost for the cheapest tier, Grow Build at $39.99 a year is the least expensive of the four, and it is the only one where the thing you are paying off is a bill you already had.
Kikoff at $5 a month reports a larger line ($750) for about $60 a year, but the line is only spendable in the Kikoff store. Kovo at $10 a month is $240 over two years and none of it comes back. Self's $25 plan is the most expensive monthly payment but costs only $89 net over 24 months, because Self returns most of the money at the end. We lay the whole field side by side, with the net cost of each, in our roundup of credit builder apps.
If your file is thin and you already pay for a streaming service or a phone plan, Grow is a reasonable, low-cost way to add a revolving tradeline without a deposit. Using two builders at once is common, and Grow itself recommends pairing products. Just keep the total monthly fees in view, because three $5 subscriptions to three builders is $180 a year for tradelines that will not fix an existing problem.
When a Grow Credit alternative makes more sense
Grow solves one problem: a file with too little history. It adds a new, low-utilization revolving account and a monthly on-time payment, and for someone starting from zero that is exactly what is needed.
It does nothing for the problem most people who search for a credit builder actually have. If your score is being held down by a collection, a charge-off, a 30-day late or a card near its limit, a $204 line with 8% utilization is a very small positive next to a very large negative. Grow's own help center says as much: "if you are using Grow Credit but you are still behind on other debts, or applying for many loans at once, you may not see the positive results you are hoping for."
That is the gap CreditPal fills. It connects read-only, explains in plain English which of your existing factors is costing you the most points, lets you simulate a change before you make it, and puts the moves in the order that pays. It opens no accounts, lends nothing and files no disputes, and it starts at $7 a month. For many people the right order is to find out first whether the file is thin or damaged, then buy the builder that matches. If it turns out to be thin and you want an installment account instead, our Kovo credit builder review covers the cheapest one.
Straight answers
Questions people ask before they buy
How much does Grow Credit cost per month?
Grow Credit's help center and Google Play listing price its plans at $3.99 a month for Build, $6.99 for Grow and $12.99 for Accelerate, or $39.99, $69.99 and $129.99 if you pay for the year up front. The fee does not cover your subscriptions; you repay those separately. Grow shows the plans you qualify for after reading your bank data, so confirm the price at signup.
Is Grow Credit free?
Not on its current help pages. Older reviews and Grow's App Store description list a free Build plan, but its help center plan table and Google Play listing both show Build at $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and its fee article says Grow "charges a membership plan fee to join." Check the plan selection screen before assuming any tier is free.
Does Grow Credit report to all 3 credit bureaus?
Yes. Grow reports your monthly repayments to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion from the time the account opens, though its help center says it can take 60 to 90 days for the account to appear. Grow itself notes that credit utilization and other debts still weigh on your score, so results vary.
Does Grow Credit do a hard credit check?
No. Grow uses a soft inquiry to pre-approve your line of credit, which does not affect your score, and states that it does not take your credit score into account. It decides your plan from 60 to 90 days of bank activity read through Plaid. If approved, a new tradeline from Grow Credit Inc appears on your reports.
What can I pay with a Grow Credit Mastercard?
Only supported subscriptions, such as Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Disney Plus and YouTube Premium. Premium subscriptions, including phone carriers like Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile and insurers like Geico and Progressive, need the Grow or Accelerate plan. The card is virtual, cannot be used through Amazon, Google or Roku billing, and does not work outside the US.
How much does Grow Credit report as my credit limit?
Grow reports 12 times your monthly spending limit. Build and Build Starter have a $17 monthly limit and report $204, Grow reports $600 on a $50 limit, and Accelerate reports $1,800 on a $150 limit. Even if you spend the full monthly amount, the reported utilization is about 8.3%.
Can I cancel Grow Credit, and is there a fee?
Yes, from Account Settings, and Grow charges no fee to close. Any balance has to be paid first, and Grow warns that membership fees may still be charged while a closure is pending, so wait for the confirmation. Closing a revolving account can raise your overall utilization, which Grow also points out.
What is the best Grow Credit alternative?
It depends on whether your file is thin or damaged. For a thin file, Kikoff reports a larger revolving line from $5 a month, and Self returns most of what you pay on its $25 plan. If your score is held down by accounts you already have, no credit builder fixes that, and CreditPal explains and sequences what to fix from $7 a month.
