Bright Money Review of Bright Builder, Membership Cost and Whether Bright Money Is Legit
Bright Money is a real, licensed app that sells a debt payoff and budgeting membership and a credit builder called Bright Builder. Premium costs $14 a month or $97 a year billed up front, and Bright Builder is a 0% APR secured line of credit opened with a deposit from $50, with no hard pull. Two lines in its own fine print matter more than the app store stars. The terms charge a $11 monthly administrative fee on the "$0 forever" Basic plan whenever you keep a balance in any Bright account after stepping down from Premium, and Bright's help center says Bright Builder reports to Equifax and TransUnion while its product page says all three bureaus. A new tradeline helps a thin file. It does nothing about late payments or collections already on your report, which is what CreditPal explains, from $7 a month.

Is Bright Money legit?
Yes. Bright Money is a US fintech based in San Francisco, and its credit builder is offered by Bright Capital Inc., which lists a federal NMLS number (2410428), with deposits held at Evolve Bank & Trust and Continental Bank. We searched the CFPB enforcement database and found no action against Bright Money. Its app store ratings sit around 4.7 to 4.8, while its Better Business Bureau score is far lower, and most of the complaints there are about billing.
Legit does not mean simple. Bright runs several products under one membership, the plans auto-renew until you cancel, and the details that cost people money live in the Terms of Use rather than on the pricing page. The sections below are the ones to read before you hand over a card number.
How much does Bright Money cost?
Bright lists three tiers. Basic is "$0 forever" and gives you loan and cash advance offers. Starter is $5 a month. Premium, which carries the debt payoff plan, credit monitoring and bill reporting, is $14 a month, or $39 every 3 months, $68 every 6 months or $97 a year, each billed up front and each renewing automatically.
The discount badges do not match the arithmetic. The annual plan is badged "Save 46%", but $97 against twelve months at $14 ($168) is a 42% saving. The 6 month plan says 24% and works out to 19%, and the 3 month plan says 13% and works out to 7%. The bigger catch is the free tier. Bright's terms say that on Basic, "a monthly Membership Administrative Fee of $11" applies if you keep a non-zero balance in any Bright account, starting 30 days after your Premium plan steps down. The terms say this covers all accounts opened for Bright products, so a deposit left in Bright Builder after you cancel Premium can trigger it.
How Bright Builder works and what it costs
Bright Builder is a secured line of credit, not a loan. You put down a security deposit starting at $50, that deposit sets your limit, and Bright reports your payments. There is no interest (0% APR), no hard pull and no minimum score, and Bright says Premium is not required to open it, although its help center "strongly recommends" keeping a membership. The line has a 3-year draw period followed by a 1-year repayment period.
Two details in the published agreement differ from the marketing. The product page describes the minimum payment as "the minimum of $10 or 50% of outstanding balance", while the agreement says it "shall be 50% of the New Balance". And Bright Builder is not available everywhere: Bright lists 19 states where you cannot open it, including California, Georgia, Ohio, Washington and Maryland. Missed payments can be reported, and the agreement allows collection costs and attorney's fees.
Does Bright Money report to all three credit bureaus?
Bright gives two answers. The Bright Builder product page and the homepage footnote say Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. Bright's own help center says it reports to "the major credit bureaus" and names only Equifax and TransUnion, and describes those two as the ones most lenders use. Its rent reporting add-on is listed on the App Store as TransUnion and Equifax only. If an Experian tradeline matters to you, for example because a lender you plan to use pulls Experian, ask Bright in writing before you fund the deposit, and check your Experian file after the first statement. Bright says the account appears about 30 days after your first statement due date.
For tradeline options that state their bureaus consistently, see our credit builder apps comparison. If you are weighing Bright against a loan-based builder, our MoneyLion Credit Builder review covers the one that cannot be cancelled once you sign.
Can you cancel Bright Money and get a refund?
You can cancel, but the refund window is narrow. Under the terms, if you cancel Premium within 30 days of the start, the refund is pro-rated and only for quarterly, semi-annual or annual plans, and you are "not eligible for any refund for any Membership term post the 14 days of payment." Monthly plans get nothing back. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid term unless you ask by email for immediate cancellation, and Bright's help center notes the refund link "does not work on the website". The most common BBB complaint is being charged the annual price when the customer expected monthly.
Bright's rent reporting add-on has its own trap. The terms say Bright may charge the $35 past reporting fee and the $4 monthly fee "even if a customer has not completed the Rent Reporting application or has not been approved." If rent reporting is why you are signing up, compare it first with our rent reporting services comparison.
Will Bright Money raise your credit score?
Bright makes no specific points claim, and its own footnote says "Credit score increases are not guaranteed." Bright Builder can help a thin file by adding an on-time account, and the debt payoff plan can lower your utilization if it actually pays balances down. Neither undoes a late payment, a collection or a charge-off that is already on your report, and those usually weigh far more than one new $50 line. If you also carry a payday-style loan, our Possible Finance review shows which bureaus those loans reach and when a missed payment lands on your file.
That is the gap CreditPal fills, from $7 a month. It connects read-only, explains in plain English which factors are costing you the most points, lets you simulate paying down a card before you do it, and orders the fixes. It opens no accounts, lends nothing, does not file disputes and does not report rent.

Questions people ask before they buy
Is Bright Money a legit company?
Yes. Bright Money is a US fintech, its credit builder is offered by Bright Capital Inc. (NMLS 2410428), and deposits are held at Evolve Bank & Trust and Continental Bank. We found no CFPB enforcement action against it. Read the Terms of Use before paying, because the fees that catch people are there.
How much is Bright Money per month?
Premium costs $14 a month, or $39 for 3 months, $68 for 6 months and $97 a year, each billed up front and auto-renewed. Starter is $5 a month. Basic is listed as free, but the terms charge $11 a month on Basic if any Bright account keeps a balance after Premium ends.
Does Bright Builder do a hard credit check?
No. Bright says there is no hard pull and no minimum score for Bright Builder. You need to be a US citizen or permanent resident, 18 or older, pass identity checks, live in a state where it is offered and fund a security deposit starting at $50.
Which credit bureaus does Bright Money report to?
Bright states it both ways. The Bright Builder product page says Equifax, TransUnion and Experian, while Bright's help center says it reports to Equifax and TransUnion. Check your Experian report after your first statement if that bureau matters to you.
Can I get a refund from Bright Money?
Only in a narrow window. The terms give a pro-rated refund if you cancel a quarterly, semi-annual or annual plan within 30 days of starting, and no refund for any term more than 14 days after payment. Monthly plans are not refunded. Request immediate cancellation by email if you want it to stop at once.
Is Bright Credit still available?
Not for new customers. Bright's help center says it "no longer offers Unsecured Lines of Credit (Bright Credit) to new customers", even though the product page still advertises lines of $500 to $8,000. Personal loans are now offered through partners, including Engine by MoneyLion.
What is the best Bright Money alternative?
It depends on the problem. For a cheap tradeline with no membership, a secured card such as OpenSky Plus or Varo Believe works. If your score is held down by late payments, collections or high balances you already have, CreditPal explains which factors cost the most and sequences what to fix, from $7 a month.
